In this article we’ll take a look at responsive design and why it is critical to your business. Mashable even called 2013 the “Year of Responsive Web Design” so it’s important to understand what it is and how it affects your business.

Responsive design has become one the most important design aspects of your website because it makes your website adapt to the size of the screen that someone is using to view your site. It allows your website to not only look great on smartphones and tablets, but also on laptops and desktops. And it does so in a user-friendly way that provides a great user experience.

As we saw recently in our article on mobile marketing trends, the profileration of tablets and smartphones has changed the way consumers search, shop, and buy. It’s worth repeating a few of the key statistics from that article:

  • Searches on mobile devices have grown 500% in the past 2 years, and over 60% of all local searches are done on mobile devices.
  • 4 out of 5 smartphone users use their smartphone to shop and 25% of smartphone users say they have purchased something on their mobile devices in the past week!
  • 40% of mobile users turned immediately to a competitor’s website if they had a bad mobile experience on another site

Now back to responsive design and an illustration showing how a responsive website will adapt to the device it is being viewed on.

Visitors to your website on smartphones and tables have very short attention spans so any problems they have viewing your site easily will cause them to give up quickly and move on to the next site.

A responsive website helps eliminate things like horizontal scrolling and image distortion by enabling flexible elements that can automatically be optimized to look and feel as clean as possible.

The good news is there isn’t anything really complicated about creating a responsive design. It’s really just a matter of making adjustable designs that can switch on the fly depending on the device they’re viewed on. The content stays the same and the site layout is just as pretty and useful regardless of the device.

Responsive website designs do require some additional effort upfront and they require a little bit more attention to detail but once implemented they are not difficult to maintain and more importantly, they are easy to use.

Smartphone and tablets are here to stay and as adoption rates continue to skyrocket it’s never been more important to make sure your website provides a user friendly responsive design.
